Alan MacDonald of Thistle, the top seed, won the Scottish Indoor Men’s Championship for the third year in succession at the Newlands club in Glasgow today. The 35 year old Edinburgh based player beat Scott Duncan, a student at Stirling University and seeded 5, 6-1 6-1 in the final. Duncan had eliminated the second seed Vincent Gillespie 6-4 6-4 at the quarter final stage and then beaten Graham Dyce 6-3 6-3 in the semi-final. MacDonald, who has now won the singles title 10 ten times, beat coach Joe Gill in the other semi-final for the loss of only two games. 14 year old Alexandra Hunter [Waverley] was the surprise winner of the women’s title beating the unseeded Clara Falxa from the Cults club in Aberdeen 6-0 6-2 in Sunday’s final. Falxa had knocked out the holder Lisa Munro in straight sets in Saturday’s semi-final with Hunter beating Raffaella Mori from Gloucestershire in 6-2 2-6 [10-7] in the other semi. MacDonald and Thorn Park’s Robert Dalgetty retained their men’s doubles title with a 6-2 6-2 final win over the Thistle club pair Euan Bell and Tim Weir.
