The historic South of Scotland Tennis Tournament got under way on Sunday 26th with overcast by dry conditions. The first 2 days saw 70 entries in the first 7 events with play commencing at 11am on the Sunday. The first champion of the 2015 event was Alistair McLeod from Ponteland Tennis Club, Newcastle Upon Tyne who defeated Harris Goss-Pastor from Western LTC in Glasgow 10-6 in the 8s
and under Mixed event. In the 10s and under girls Jenna Conroy from Weirs Recreation LTC from Glasgow provided to strong for the field winning all her 4 matches to secure the title.
With over 100 matches planned on the first 2 days the officials kept a close eye on the Moffat weather and unfortunately it took a turn for the worst. After 40 plus matches on the Beechgrove Blaes the rain set in after 3pm and quickly the courts became unplayed. The players then up sticks and moved the event to Dumfries for the remainder of Sunday’s play and subsequently Monday as well. Play continued through-out Monday in the damp conditions and possibly for the first time ever matches in the South of Scotland event were played under floodlights at Dumfries. In the late evening Ben Hudson from David Lloyd Tennis Club in Dundee defeated Kyle Hughes-McCabe from Leyland LTC from Lancashire 5-4, 4-1 to take the 10s and under boys title.
In the girls 12s and under doubles Lucia Rizza and Maisie Wood edge past Gemma Filshill and Ama Nisbet 5-3, 4-0. All girls coming from the East of Scotland. Play continues at Moffat through-out the week with Junior finals planned for Saturday and senior finals on the Sunday.
