The Border Cups Tennis Tournament was completed over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd August at Dumfries Tennis Club with 24 players competing over the 2 days. The event was again supported by Soltyre Ltd from Heathhall with DS Roofing Ltd sponsoring the match balls. Saturday’s play was mainly dry with some heavy showers but this didn’t stop the players. Last year’s beaten finalist Niklas Stingl from Kelso in the Borders was the favourite for this year’s event but this was short lived as he lost in the quarter finals to Kenan Wallace. Kenan took a tight first set 6-4 with Niklas levelling in the second 6-2 before Kenan took an early lead in the championship tie break third set and never looked back as he completed a very classy win 10-5 in the third. Unfortunately Kenan couldn’t repeat his form in the semi as Stevie White from Dalbeattie Tennis Club rolled back the years to win a tight match 7-5, 5-7 10-5. In the other semi defending champion Colin Dunbar used all his experience to come back from a set down against young Alex Shearman from Lochmaben. Alex took an early lead winning the first set 6-1 and looked comfortable in the second set before a lapse in concentration let Colin back in as he took the second set 7-5. In the championship tie-break Colin took a 4-0 lead to then lose the next 5 points to let Alex back in the match before Colin edged the match taking the tie-break 10-8. In the final both players looked weary from the previous matches with Colin just keeping Stevie at arm’s length to make him champions for the third year in a row taking the match 6-3, 6-2.
In the consolation final Jason Grindall completed a hat-trick of wins against players with an 8.2 rating. He overcame Lochmaben player Chad Lawson in the final 6-2, 6-3.
Colin was back in action on the Sunday defending his doubles title with Johnny Short from the Borders against Dalbeattie pair of Brian Litster and Fraser Patterson. Colin and Johnny raced into an early lead taking the first set 6-2 before a few moments of genius from Jonny and some decisive winners from Colin completed the result taking the second set 6-2. In the consolation doubles final Ben and Lister McKiddie edged a very close match against Paul Boardman and Stevie white, taking the match 6-3, 7-6.
