The third and final mini red tour competition for 2017 was completed at Beechgrove Sports Centre in Moffat on 26th March. Again we had another large entry with 15 boys and 6 girls competing for the top prize with the overall leaderboard trophies also being decided on the day.
The tour was created for children 8 years and under to play tennis on red size courts which is the equivalent of a badminton size court and this year was sponsors by Scott Pagan Roofing Services. Players would accumulate points for each event they played in with medals being awarded for the winners, runners-up, third place and consolation winners at each event with the overall point’s winner receiving at trophy at the end.
Children from Seaforth Tennis Club in Annan, Beechgrove Tennis Club in Moffat and Dumfries Tennis Club took part over the 3 events during January, February and March.
On the day, Erin McCluskey (Dumfries) and Daniel McKenna (Annan) were top of the respective leaderboards with Erin undefeated having won the two previous events with Daniel having won at Annan and making the semi-final at Dumfries. Erin was in the position where she just had to turn up and she was guaranteed the leaderboard title but she was in great form again and completed the event and tour undefeated to collect her third winner’s medal and the overall leaderboard trophy as she complete the Moffat event with 5 wins. Both the runner up and third place kids came from the Annan club with Mia Renwick coming second and Sian Henderson taking third.
In the boys event Daniel McKenna (Annan) was looking for a top 4 finish to secure the leaderboard but with Euan Sharp (Dumfries) and Moffat duo if Oliver McKnight and Harry Brown all looking to catch Daniel at the top of the leaderboard and after the round robin stages all four boys had qualified for the quarter finals along with Logan McCluskey and Rhys Edwards (Dumfries), Thomas McCleary (Annan) and Finlay Walton (Moffat) making up the quarter finals. In the quarters Daniel McKenna edged past Thomas 10-1, Euan beat Oliver 10-4, Finlay beat Logan McCluskey 10-1 and Harry beat Rhys 10-3. In the semi finals we had two close matches, first up Harry edge past Finlay 10-8 and then Euan won another tight match 11-9 against Daniel which left Euan against Harry in the final.
Daniel won the third place off against Finlay 10-4 and in the consolation final Devon Jones (Annan) beat Cameron Hunter (Dumfries) 10-5. In the final again we had another close match as Euan Sharp claimed his second title in 2 years as he edge past Harry Brown 10-8 to secure the win.
