Yet another great warm day for tennis as we welcomed Beechgrove Tennis Club into the Red2Yellow tour as they staged their first competition on their new tennis courts.
We has 16 Red (8s & under) ball players and 9 Green (10s & under) ball players taking to the courts on a very hot day. The Reds kicked off at 11am with 14 D&G kids and one each from the west of Scotland and the east of Scotland. With a very strong field the experience kids came through the 4 round robin groups without much difficulty. This gave us a 6 Dumfries kids in the main knock-out stage and the guests from East and West of Scotland. The quarter finals saw Cameron Hunter bt Nikemi Olafare (west) 10-4, Rory MacKenzie (east) bt Dominik Czopek 10-4, Grant Kerr edge past fellow Dumfries player Autumn Hodgins 10-8 with Logan McCluskey bt Jack Wearing 10-1. The draw kept the 2 favourites Logan and Rory apart as Logan bt Grant 10-3 and in the other match Dumfries’s Cameron Hunter played some excellent tennis to beat the joint favourite Rory MacKenzie 10-5 and set up a reply of last weeks D&G Junior championship final against hitting partner Logan. However this time Cameron revered the outcome as he completed the match with a 10-7 victory over Logan as he claimed his first Red2Yellow Tour gold medal. In the consolation final Cameron’s younger brother was just edge out a tight match as he lost to Moffat’s Kathryn Wilson 10-8. These results still leaves Cumbria’s Jake Irving top of the leaderboard with Logan into second and Cameron third.
In the green event we had 8 local D&G kids and Rory’s big sister Ruby MacKenzie taking part. After the round robin stages Ben Rogerson (Moffat) bt Ruby Mackenzie (East) 4-1 to book a place in the final. In the other semi Daniel Palmer (Moffat) bt Annan’s Devon Jones 4-0 to set up a final again fellow club player Ben. Ruby managed to match her brothers achievement of finishing 3rd in the event after she beat Devon 4-0, in the final Ben held on to beat Daniel 4-1 to claim his first win in the Red2Yellow Tour. In the consolation final Dumfries pair of Jacob Holden and Eve Crombie played out a tight match which Jacob won 4-1. This leaves Danny McKenna to of the leaderboard with Jacob second and Daniel third.
