Dumfries end Dalbeatties undefeated run

Dalbeatties Ladies undefeated run comes to an end with a home defeat on the 14th against Dumfries. Current records show that Dalbeattie have been Ladies champions since 2010 with results from 2011 showing a record of 17 wins and 2 draws.  This 19 match run is a great achievement in any sports and has to be acknowledge as such.

Dumfries continued their impressive start to the season after their battling 2-2 draw against Stewartry on week one, this 4-0 victory against Dalbeattie was unexpected but with the reverse fixture being played tonight at Dumfries, then Dalbeattie have an instant chance to get back into the title race.

Dalbeattie edge rain delayed Scottish Cup match

Dumfries and Dalbeattie battled through rain and hail but eventually got the qualifying Scottish Cup match completed after 5 and half hours. Dumfries took the early advantage with Lister and Dan McKiddie edging past Paul Boardman and Stephen White 6-1, 6-4 and Graeme Cross and Duncan Muir winning 6-1, 6-4 against Dan Donley and James Richardson. The turning point in the match came when Brian Litster and Fraser Paterson beat Chris Topping and Richie Cunningham in the championship tie-break 3rd set, taking the match 7-6, 3-6 & 10-7. The second round of matches started then stopped for the rain, then after a short break clearing the water off the courts they tried again only for the heavens to open again with heavy rain and hail battering down for 15 minutes. Another half hour plus was spent clearing the courts then Dalbeattie levelled the match when Paul and Stephen beat Chris and Richie 6-4, 6-4. Lister and Dan reclaimed the lead for Dumfries winning 6-2, 6-1 against Dan and James before Brian and Fraser beat Graeme and Duncan 6-3, 6-2. With the match level at 3-3 Dalbeattie struck first in the final round when Paul and Stephen beat Graeme and Duncan 6-3, 6-0. This left Dumfries needing to win the final 2 matches to win the match but Brain and Fraser took the advantage straight away by winning the first set 6-0 against Lister and Dan, back came Dumfries winning the second 6-2 before Dalbeattie edged it on the championship tie-break 11-9 to take the match 5 rubbers to 3. New Image Dalbeattie will be hoping for a home draw when the 1st round draw takes place in 2 weeks.

D&G Summer Leagues

This weeks matches saw the return of some familiar faces and the introduction of a rising star.

After a year out of the game both Eileen and Geoff Legg made welcome returns to the leagues. Stewartry CSC Ladies were absent last year so it was good to see Eileen, Kirsten, Chris and Charlotte make a welcome return to the leagues with a hard-fought draw 2-2 at Dumfries. Dumfries welcomed Fiona to their team and along with Louise, Sally and Diane, they came from 2-0 to grab a welcome draw in the first match of the season.

In the gents league again, Dumfries A were left frustrated as their match at Moffat was cancelled due to the weather but elsewhere there was a good victory for Dumfries B as they overcame Dumfries C 4-0 with debutant junior Alex Shearman putting in a man of the match performance with some sublime tennis. With Dumfries C being touted as match favourites (by the B team) they were unable to capitalise on their good start with the combination of experience heads and the craft of Alex proving too much on the night. Down the A75 the Stewartry derby saw Stewartry CSC entertain Dalbeattie at Castle Douglas. With Geoff Legg making a return to the competitive stage after a year out hopes were high of a Stewartry victory and his team didn’t disappoint. The first 2 matches both went to deciding championship tie-breaks with Stevie and Paul from Dalbeattie just edging past Geoff and Colin 10-7 to take the first rubber but Andy and Rab pulled the match level with a 11-9 victory in the 3rd to edge past Dan and young James. The second round of matches proved to be less dramatic with Stewartry winning both matches 6-4, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2 to win the match 3-1.

These results leave Stewartry top of the table with Kirkcudbright and Dumfries A still to play a match.
