Double Triumph for Dalbeattie

Dalbeattie completed a rare double at the weekend. After their B team won the division 2 league, the A team went into the match against Stewartry CSC knowing that at win or draw would be enough to secure their 15th straight title.

The first 2 rubbers went to championship tie-breaks with each team picking up a rubber each. Paul & Maureen got Dalbeattie of to a winning start with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win against Colin and Susan with Stewartry bouncing straight back as they reversed the score as Bruce and Charlotte edge it with a 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 win against Stephen and Shona. Stewartry then seized the initiative as Colin and Charlotte then took the next rubber 6-3,6-2 against Paul and Shona, this left the final rubber to decide the fate of the title and again Stewartry gained the upper hand as Bruce and Susan grabbed the first set 7-5 before Stephen and Maureen pegged it back to take the 2nd 6-3 and with the momentum Dalbeattie secured the draw as they took the tie-break 10-1 and with that secure the title for the 15th straight year.

Mixed League 2 results

In League 1 defending champions Dalbeattie A just need to avoid defeat against Stewartry CSC to claim their 15th title in a row, however is Stewartry manage the win they would then need to complete their match against Dumfries A which currently sits at 1 rubber each and complete that with a win to take the title. At the bottom of the league Kirkcudbright A await the visit of Dumfries B knowing if they avoid defeat they will secure their stay in the top division unless Dumfries B can secure the relevant points over Dumfries A with one of their 2 outstanding fixtures.

D&G Red2Yellow Winter Tour

Saturday 15th saw the Red and Green players take to the courts for their first winter tour event. We had 5 players in the Red event and 4 in the Green.

Despite a massive downpour and the good patience of the parent and players we managed to complete all the scheduled matches. In the Red ball event it was 5 yrs old Adam Hunter from Dumfries taking the gold medal as he completed the day with 3 wins out of 4. Rex Castillo from Carlisle came 2nd with 3 wins but lost the head to head with Adam with Jack Wearing (Dumfries) 3rd, Toby Irving (Carlisle) 4th and Dominik Czopek (Dumfries) coming 5th.

In the green ball event, a late call-off gave Orange Dumfries player Cameron Hunter a chance to sample tennis on the big court. The gold medal went to Penicuik’s Gregor Ritson who won 3 out of 3 very tight matches with Carlisle pair of William Tromans and Oliver Sewell’s coming 2nd and 3rd respectfully. Young Cameron didn’t managed any wins but certainly held his own in his first green ball event.

Winter Tour starts with rain but finishes in the sunshine

The start of the D&G Red2Yellow Winter Tour had 8 boys and 4 girls competing in the Dumfries drizzle. With several of the kids starting out on their orange journey there were a lot of nerves with some of the players and parent.

After a nervous knock-up the players got started and soon got into the swing of it. The Summer tour winner Oliver Clark secured an early victory against Dumfries’s Logan McCluskey which set a trend as all of our regions kids, (Harry, Autumn, Cameron and Grant) had the same start with only Lewis Hutchings who edged a tight match against Grant Kerr 7-5, 5-7, 7-4 securing an opening round win.

In the girls group both Hanna and Luisa secured back to back wins against Autumn and Eliana to set up a final match. In the 3rd & fourth play-off Eliana edge a very tight match against Autumn with both girls playing some well controlled tennis before Eliana came out on top 8-6, 9-7. In the final Hanna started well taking the first set 7-4 before Luisa came back to take the 2nd 7-4 and with the memento Luisa continued on taking the 3rd 7-2 and claim the win.

In the boys 1st semi final Oliver lost a tight match going down 5-7, 7-4, 7-5 to Oscar Emery before Jake Irving eased past Logan 7-3, 7-2. Logan bounced back quickly to secure 3rd place against Oliver Clark 7-3, 8-6. In the final Jake completed another win as he beat Oscar 7-3, 7-4 and win the gold medal.
