Worth the Wait!

It has been 22 matches in the making but on Wednesday 25th May 2016 Kirkcudbright Tennis Club men’s team recorded the first win since returning to the Men’s League and gained their first ever points in 3 years of trying. Having played well all season without any rewards it finally came last week when the welcomed Beechgrove men’s team from Moffat and secured a 3-1 victory which takes them off the bottom of the league with Beechgrove now occupying that spot. Meanwhile at Castle Douglas again another match was suspended before it could be finished with Dumfries A holding a slender 2-1 lead against Stewartry CSC with one rubber to be completed. Bad light and rain disrupted the top of the table clash which leaves Stewartry CSC still top of the league. Elsewhere the Leicester of the tennis world Dumfries C, continued there fine form as they edge out neighbours Dumfries B with a 3-1 victory with elevated them to 2nd in the league as they recorded their largest ever points total of 7 to date with 4 matches to play.

In the ladies League Stewartry CSC secured the title with a match to spare, with a 4-0 win away at Moffat as their nearest challengers Dalbeattie were being held by Dumfries 2-2 at Dumfries. This result leaves Stewartry Ladies on 10 points with Dalbeattie on 5.

Dumfries & Galloway Summer Leagues Results and Fixtures

In the development league Annan travelled through to Dalbeattie and played out a 2-2 draw.

In the Junior leagues Beechgrove under 10 boys and girls started their campaigns with the boys recording a 3-0 away win to Seaforth Annan whilst in Moffat the girls has a similar score line 3-0 at home to Seaforth Annan.

This week sees the D&G Senior Championship take place at Dumfries Tennis Club with 16 in the field for the singles and 6 pairs in the doubles on Sunday. The gents final is scheduled for 10am on Sunday morning with the doubles final at approximately 3pm on Sunday.

 

Advantage Stewartry

In the D&G Men’s League Stewartry CSC took advantage of Dumfries A’s match away to Beechgrove being cancelled as they recorded a 3-1 victory away to Dumfries B. In the other match Dumfries C entertained Kirkcudbright and with some tight matches kept their slim hopes of a top 2 finish with a 4-0 victory.

D&G League Fixtures and Results

In the ladies League Stewartry CSC emulated their male counter parts and strengthened their grip at the top of the league with a home win 3-1 against Dumfries keeping up their 100% record.

This week sees Dumfries Ladies entertain Dalbeattie and Stewartry CSC make the long trip to Moffat to play Beechgrove. In the gents league Dumfries C entertain Dumfries B, Dumfries A travel through to Castle Douglas for a top of the table clash against Stewartry CSC and Beechgrove make the long trip to Kirkcudbright.

Mini Tennis Success

Dumfries Tennis Club held the most recent mini tennis events with a Mini Red event and the first ever LTA Mini Orange event in Dumfries and Galloway. Over the 2 events 19 kids from Moffat, Annan and Dumfries played some excellent tennis on what became a very pleasant day. In the Orange event, which is for kids aged between 8 and 9.5yrs, Fergus Reynolds-Lewis (Dumfries), Rose Brown, Keeley Scott and Daniel Palmer all from Beechgrove Tennis club in Moffat battle it out in a round robin format. After some very good matches it was Fergus who edge a close contest with Rose being the runner-up.

In the red event 16 children took part with several kids taking part in a competition for the first time. After the group stages the final four were Daniel Palmer who continued on from his successful Mini Red tour victory earlier in the year, Daniel McKenna and Evie McKnight who also had a very successful mini red tour and Ben Rogerson. In two very tight semi finals Daniel Palmer beat Daniel McKenna 10-6 with Ben Rogerson recording the same score against Evie McKnight and in an all Moffat final Daniel Palmer continued on to take the final with a 10-4 win over Ben. Alfie Kowal from Annan won the Consolation final 10-7 against Harry Brown from Moffat.

Mini Green Competition

Seaforth Annan Tennis Club held its first LTA rated competition on Saturday 14th May. The green ball competition was open to children 10yrs and under with 7 boys and 4 girls taking part on their 2 courts. In the girls event Heather Keal (Moffat) beat Isla Grieve (Annan) 4-0 in the final and in the boys event Sam Hetherington (Carlisle) beat Fergus Reynolds-Lewis (Dumfries) 4 -0 in the boys final. This week sees Dumfries holding a Red Ball (8s and under) and Orange ball (9 and under) competition on Saturday 21st with a 1pm start.

D&G Leagues

After 4 weeks of play Dumfries A and Stewartry CSC sit joint top of the league. Last weeks matches saw Dumfries B beat Kirkcudbright 4-0 to claim their first 2 points of the season. Dumfries A has a similar result at home to Dumfries C (4-0) and have now recorded 3 straight 4-0 victories. Elsewhere Stewartry CSC travelled through to Moffat to play Beechgrove which proved a tricky tie last year on the blaes courts but this time Stewartry eased to a 4-0 victory to keep their title hopes alive.

This week (18th) sees Dumfries C entertain Kirkcudbright who are on their 3 straight visit to Dumfries having played both the A and B teams in recent weeks, Stewartry CSC are on the travels again as the come to Dumfries to take on Dumfries B. In the other gents fixture, current champions Dumfries A  travel through to Moffat to play Beechgrove. In the ladies League Stewartry CSC entertain Dumfries whilst Beechgrove are scheduled to travel down to Dalbeattie.

Tennis is a sport for everyone – join the weekend fun!

Try tennis for free this summer at a Great British Tennis Weekend event! Thousands of free events will be taking place throughout the summer and all across the country, with sessions to suit the whole family. There are Highland Spring Mini Tennis sessions, family time, free play, Cardio Tennis and numerous other kinds of activities to get involved in.

Rackets and balls will be provided, so whether you’ve never picked up a racket before or you’re a seasoned regular – there is fun to be had.

Weekends will take place throughout summer, but will mainly be on 14th/15th May and 16th/17th July.

The Future Looks Bright!

Tennis in the region has just received a massive boost as 11 locals all recently completed their Level 1 coaching assistant qualification at Beechgrove Sport Centre. The 3 day course was completed on the 30th April with a fine mixture of young and experience! players all completing the first step on the coaching ladder, with a good mix of areas being represented from Gatehouse, Southerness, Dumfries, Lochmaben, Annan and Moffat.

P1060787 Along side the current two level 3 coaches Mike and Richie and several other Level 1 assistants, D&G now has it’s biggest ever pool of coaches and assistants the region has ever seen and already most of these newly qualified level 1’s are helping out at various club in the region.

Dumfries C hold onto top spot

In the gents league Dumfries C came from behind against Beechgrove from Moffat (2-2) to secure a valuable point which keeps them top of the league after week two. In the other match at Dumfries, the B team entertaining the current champions Dumfries A, although the matches were close on the night the overall results wasn’t with the champions securing a 4-0 win to start their defence of the title. In the other match Stewartry CSC travelled through to Kirkcudbright and gained a 3-1 victory. In the ladies league there was only the one match played with Dalbeattie securing a 4-0 victory over Dumfries.

This week (4th) in the Gents league sees Dumfries C travelling through to Castle Douglas to play Stewartry CSC, Dumfries A entertain Kirkcudbright and Dumfries B make to journey up the road to Moffat to play Beechgrove. In the ladies league Dalbeattie entertain Stewartry CSC whilst Beechgrove travel through to Dumfries.
