D&G Mini Red Tour Final

The final event of the 2018 D&G Mini Red Tour promised to be a spectacular show with 5 boys and 2 girls vying for the 2 shields.

In the girls event both Lauren Gourley (Moffat) and Autumn Hodgins (Dumfries) won the first 5 matches each and competed in the final match of the day for the girls. The winner would take the winners medal and the shield. Both girls had played some create tennis to get to this stage and the final again produced some excellent rallies as the girls got underway. Autumn started strongly taking an early 2-0 lead which she extended to 6-1 before Lauren fought back to win the next 3 points to make it 6-4. A couple more were shared before Autumn then completed the win 10-6. On the day, places were the same as the leaderboard as Grace Palmer (Moffat) came third, Eilidh Topping (Dumfries) came fourth with Kathryn Wilson (Beechgrove) coming fifth. This year we had 10 girls competing over the 3 events which is the best ever. Well played all the girls.

In the boys event there was great excitement as play got underway. After some great play in the round robins the first quarter final got underway as Brodie Little (Annan) edge a tight match 10-8 against Grant Kerr (Dumfries). The second quarter saw a repeat of the Annan final but this time the results was reversed as Lewis Hutchings (Dumfries) won the shoot-out 10-9 to beat Harry Brown (Moffat). That result had Harry looking over his shoulder as he was at that stage top of the leaderboard with the pack chasing him with more points to play for. Harry could only watch on. The 3rd quarter had Oliver McKnight (Moffat) against Logan McCluskey (Dumfries), the match went to the wire as Logan let a lead slip and Oliver took advantage to build up the points before winning 10-8. In the 4th quarter final Cameron Hunter (Dumfries) bt James Wilson (Moffat) 10-0 to complete the semi final line up. In the Consolation final Jack Wearing went one better than in Annan as he edge past Oliver Mattinson (Langholm) 10-8 to win the Consolation medal. The first semi saw Brodie Little win against Lewis 10-2 before Cameron Hunter beat Oliver McKnight 10-6. Oliver claimed third place as he beat Lewis 10-4 which ruled out Lewis’s chances of wining the shield. This left a shoot out between Brodie and Cameron with the winner being crowned overall leaderboard champion. Cameron started strong winning the first 2 points before Brodie levelled at 3-3. Cameron took the next point before Brodie won the next 5 to make it 8-4 then Cameron drew level to make it 8-8 only for Brodie to win the next 2 to take the title and the shield.

A great trio of events which were sponsored this year by Horizon Windows Dumfries. We had 23 local D&G boys competing this year with 5 Cumbrian boys taking part over the 3 events with a total of 223 matches over the 3 events.

D&G Winter League

The defending champions start the 5th Winter league with a win as they look to make it 5 titles out of 5 years.

D&G Winter League Fixtures & Results 2018

Annan Seaforth were the opponents this week as both fixtures from last week were snowed off. The first match saw the tightest of matches as Paul Boardman edged past Mark Sindall (Annan) with a 6-4, 7-6 victory. In the second match Stevie Whites showed all his experience as he eased past Gareth Jones (Annan) 6-, 6-1 before the Dalbeattie duo wrapped up the match with a 6-1, 6-0 doubles win.

In the other match Dumfries travelled through to Kirkcudbright hoping to reverse last years 2-1 loss. In the singles we had a match victory for each team as Ian Cain overcame Martin Wilson (Dumfries) by 6-2, 6-3 whilst Graeme Cross (Dumfries) leveled the match by beating Mike Buckmaster 6-2, 6-2. The deciding rubber started well for the Kirkcudbright duo as they took the first set 6-3 before Dumfries leveled by taking the 2nd by the same score. Down to the tie-break which Dumfries edged with a 10-7 narrowest of wins to claim the match 2-1 and put them 2nd in the league behind Dalbeattie.

Next week sees Dumfries host Annan whilst Dalbeattie head down to Kirkcudbright.
