YOUNG Moffatonians are on track to become future tennis stars thanks to free training

Last year Great Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time in 76 years.
And to celebrate, earlier this month the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) selected 1000 coaches throughout the country to promote and introduce 10,000 new players to tennis between April and June this year.
The programme, named the Davis Cup Legacy Programme – Tennis for Kids, is set to come to Moffat on Saturday.
The free lessons are aimed at children aged between five to eight, p1 to p4, who have never played tennis before.
Ten children will be taught by tennis coach Mike McMillin for six weeks at Beechgrove Tennis Club, with all children getting a free tennis racket too.
And demand has been so high that places for the first course were gone within four days so the LTA are offering a second course for an extra ten Moffat children.
Looking forward to launching the programme, Mike said: “ I am excited about this program as I was the only coach selected in Dumfries and Galloway and see it as a great way to promote the sport in the region.”
He added: “This is also a great opportunity for Beechgrove Tennis Club as the LTA provide funding, equipment and training as well as support for this initiative.
“I was able to undertake a days training in Glasgow from some of the top coaches in the country including Greg Rusedski, former world number four and US Open finalist, and Annabelle Croft, former British number one.
“I was also provided with a British Davis Cup tracksuit which I have to wear when conducting this course.”

The course kicks off on Saturday from 1 pm to 2 pm at the tennis club and runs for six weeks.
Next week the second lot of sessions will begin, they will take place from 2 pm to 3 pm
