Tennis Dumfries & Galloway AGM

This is intimation of the forthcoming above AGM  on Thursday, 13th November 2013 at 7pm. The venue is the Walker & Sharp Office, 37 George Street, Dumfries

The committee would appreciate there being at least one representative from each club in attendance at the AGM where possible.

If there are any motions /resolutions /nominations for Committee positions these should  be intimated to Lister McKiddie in advance of the AGM.

Please let us know who at your club will be the club contact for the District in the year to come.

Promotion for the South

The South of Scotland over 45’s tennis team has finished second in League Division Three in the British Leagues, thereby gaining promotion.  South of Scotland comprises of Dumfries and Galloway, Borders and Ayrshire.  This years team had players from Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire.  Local players, Fraser Patterson of Dalbeattie and Lister McKiddie of Dumfries Tennis Club took part.  The team lost only one match against a strong Warwickshire side who were unbeaten. Otherwise, the team beat Lincolnshire 10-0, Bedfordshire 8-2, Cheshire 8-2 and Cleveland 8-2.  The team looks forward to competing in League Division 2 next year in what will be an extremely high standard.

Beechgrove secure B Division Title

Beechgrove Tennis Club from Moffat edged a tight play-off match against Dumfries B to secure the Mixed B league title. The first round of rubbers couldn’t separate the teams as Lewis Gilmour and Rhona Park beat Scott Beveridge and Louise Stewart 6-1, 6-3 but Dumfries came back with David Strachan and Judi McKiddie beating Bryan Keal and Ella Paul 7-5, 6-2. With Moffat fielding 3 junior players they took an early advantage with Lewis and Ella winning 6-2, 6-4 against Scott and Judi before Bryan and Rhona secured the title by beating David and Lousie 7-6, 6-1.

Double Victory for Dumfries Teams

Both Dumfries teams suffered defeats in the opening weekend (14th Sept) of the Aegon National Tennis Leagues. In league 2 Dumfries A traveled to Perth to play the Tayside league champions but found them too hot as Kinnoull Tennis Club won all four singles matches and both doubles to take the match 12-0. In the 4th division Dumfries B took on the Central league champions Falkirk and again the visitors were far to good for Dumfries as they won the match 12-0. This week (21st) saw a change in fortunes as both Dumfries teams managed to win their matches against 2 teams from Livilands Tennis Club who are based in Stirling. Their 1st team traveled to Dumfries to play Dumfries A but unfortunately they only managed to travel with 3 players. Dan McKiddie and Alex Shearman won their singles matches with Lister McKiddie losing his but Lister and Dan secured the win with victory in the doubles, this gave Dumfries A the match 10-2. Dumfries B took the long trip to Stirling to play Livilands 2 for the 3rd time in 4 years but on this occasion they managed to secure a victory. Lewis Gilmour, Chad Lawson and Michael Goldie all secured wins in the singles and Lewis and Chad completed the victory in the doubles, this gave Dumfries an 8-2 victory which is Dumfries B’s first ever win in the national leagues.

Next week (28th) sees Dumfries A travel to Glasgow to play Glasgow Uni whilst Dumfries B entertain Kirkhill Tennis Club from Glasgow.

Beechgrove and Dumfries B both earning valuable away 3-1 wins which leaves both teams on the same number of points and the same amount of rubbers for and against, which means under the current rules both teams will complete a play-off at Dumfries Tennis Club.

Beechgrove secure the title

Beechgrove tennis club played host to Dumfries in the Under 12s junior district leagues knowing a victory on home blaes would secure the title. Dumfries started strong with Jed Simpson from Dumfries taking the first match 4-0, 4-0 again Robbie Jack but Ewan McMillin levelled the match for Beechgrove with a 4-0, 4-2 win against Lewis Reid. In the doubles Beechgrove continued the come back with another win on the blaes courts taking the final match 4-0, 4-2 to secure the title.

Mixed B league goes to the wire

The mixed B league will be settled on the final day of the season after Beechgrove earned a valuable point away to Stranraer on Wednesday with the 2-2 draw. Dalbeattie B have an outside chance of the title but they need to beat Dumfries B and rely on Kirkcudbright beating Beechgrove.

Dumfries B need to better Beechgrove result to lift the title and Beechgrove just need to match the Dumfries result as long as Dalbeattie don’t win 4-0.

Dalbeattie Retain their Title as Dumfries B go top

Dalbeattie A edge past Stewartry CSC to secure the title for another year. The first 2 rubbers were shared before 2 tight rubbers eventually went Dalbeattie’s way to secure a 3-1 victory. In the other match Dumfries A traveled through to Kirkcudbright to complete their final match and overcame the home side 4-0 to help them finish 2nd this year and although Kirkcudbright finished last it was a great effort for their first time in the A league.

With only 3 matches remaining in the B league Dumfries B went top of the league by beating  Stranraer 4-0. This leaves Dumfries on 10 points with 1 match remaining, Beechgrove on 9 points with 2 matches remaining and Dalbeattie on 8 points with 1 match left.

Champion defends his titles

The Border Cups Tennis Tournament was completed over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th August with 21 players competing over the 2 days. The event was again supported by Soltyre Ltd from Heathhall with DS Roofing Ltd sponsoring the match balls. Both days were bathed in sunshine with the singles title being retained by Colin Dunbar as he edge out 15 years old Niklas Stingl from Kelso in the Borders, 6-2, 7-5. In the consolation final Steven White came back from a set down (4-6, 6-1) to secure the win against Kyle Singh by taking the championship tie-break 11-9.

Colin was back in action on the Sunday defending his doubles title with Johnny Short from the Borders against local boys Dan and Lister Mckiddie. Colin and Johnny raced into an early lead taking the first set 6-1 before Dan and Lister broke early in the 2nd to lead 5-4 but the experienced pair rattled off the next 3 games to take the title 7-5 in the second set.

Mixed A league decider

The mixed A league goes down to the final week of matches. Simply, if Dalbeattie don’t lose at home against their nearest challengers Stewartry CSC then they win the league. Stewartry need to win 4-0 to win the league but if they fail to win and Dumfries win against bottom team Kirkcudbright then Stewartry could finish 3rd. Last weeks results saw Dalbeattie edge a 3-1 at Castle Douglas and Dumfries beat Kirkcudbright 4-0.

In the B league Dumfries B went from top of the league to 4th after a 4-0 loss to Beechgrove, with Dalbeattie recording 2 wins again Stranraer 3-1 and Kirkcudbright 4-0 to send them top of the league with 3 matches to play. Elsewhere Stranraer recorded a 4-0 win at Kirkcudbright to keep their title chances alive. This week sees Dumfries entertain Kirkcudbright B whilst Dalbeattie play back to back matches away to Stranraer and Beechgrove
