For the first time in an estimated 12 years Dumfries & Galloway has entered a team into the Scottish Junior Inter District Championships.
Seven player from the regions and one guest player make up the eight player squad which consists of Chad Lawson, Alex Shearman & Rhona Park from Lochmaben Tennis Club, Lewis Gilmour, Ella & Freya Paul from Beechgrove Tennis Club Moffat and Ruairidh McRoberts from Dumfries Tennis Club.

Dumfries B completed their winter league campaign as they started, with a loss. With home advantage Kirkcudbright’s Ian Cain comfortably beat Michael Goldie 6-0 & 6-2 to take an early advantage. Things looked better for Dumfries when Jason Grindall took the first set on a tie-break against Ross Fulton but Ross rallied back to take the second 6-2 and eventually completing the win by securing the championship tie-break 12-10. Kirkcudbright complete the job with a 6-4, 7-6. This leaves Dumfries B secured to the bottom. The title should be secured this weekend if the weather prevails as Dalbeattie entertain Dumfries A and the final match is scheduled to be played under the floodlights at Nunholm on Wednesday 9th between Lochmaben and kirkcudbright.
Dumfries record back to back league wins to set-up a league decider with Dalbeattie.
Dumfries B entertained Dalbeattie on Sunday but found the visitors to strong on the day going down 3-0. Elsewhere Dumfries A travelled through to Lochmaben to play the young guns of Chad and Rhona and despite a good start from Lochmaben, Dumfries just edged a 2-1 win. Dumfries then entertained Kirkcudbright on Wednesday (26th) under the floodlights and again took a tight match recording a 3-0 victory. The title will be decided when Dalbeattie entertain Dumfries in the final match on Sunday 6th April, with the winner being crowned the inaugural D&G winter league champions.

Eventually, the D&G winter tennis leagues get under way.
With the first 2 rounds of matches being cancelled due to the wet weather it was a welcome relief to see the winter league matches start. The first 2 matches up were Dumfries 2 v Lochmaben and Kirkcudbright entertained Dalbeattie. Lochmaben secure a 2-1 victory against Dumfries 2 with Dalbeattie recording the same result 2-1 at Kirkcudbright.
This weeks results saw a 3-0 victory for Dumfries against Dumfries 2 and Dalbeattie beat Lochmaben 3-0.
Next week (23rd) sees both Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie travelling to play Dumfries and Dumfries 2 respectfully.

Dumfries Tennis Club is running a junior ratings competition on Good Friday, the event on Friday 18th April is taking place during the Easter holidays. There are 4 events on the day subject to numbers, 12s and under, 14s and under, 16s and under and finally 18s and under.

On a wet and cold Tuesday 16 junior tennis players competed in 6 events.
With Monday’s (17th) scheduled start cancelled due to persistent rain and then play was delayed for 2 hours on the Tuesday, play eventually got under way at 12.30 thanks to Bryan and Richies hard work in clearing the water from the courts. The first winner of the day was Josh Kenny (Prestwick Tennis Club) who beat Ewan McMillin (Beechgrove Tennis Club) 6-1 to claim the 12 & under event. Josh also won the 14 & under event beating Daniel Irving (Dumfries Tennis Club) 6-0 with Jay Gaffney (Dalbeattie Tennis Club) winning the consolation 14 & under event 6-1 against Ross McMillin (Beechgrove Tennis Club).The big winner of the day was Lewis Gilmour (Beechgrove) who won the 16 & under event by beating Euan McGlynn (Beechgrove) 6-4 and with this his BTM rating dropped to 8.2. In the consolation event for the 16s Liam Taylor (Dalbeattie Tennis Club) beat fellow club player Jay Gaffney 6-3. In the final event 18 & Under, Chad Lawson narrowly edged past Rhona Park, both from Lochmaben Tennis Club, 6-4. Lochmaben Under 16s collect the Peggy Swallow trophy after a great season sees them win the league with 5 wins and 1 walkover to complete the league without losing a match. Rhona Park completed the leagues winning all four of her matches without dropping a set. Chad Lawson and Rhona are pictured above with the third member of the winning team Callum Scott not available at the time of taking the picture.
Dumfries and Galloway Tennis is starting a winter league in February, with two player teams from several clubs competing on Sunday’s throughout February and March. The format is similar to the current Junior leagues but with full sets. Both players play a singles match against their opposite number then they finish of with a doubles match. The league is open to any D&G district club and any players who can compete and is a member of the relevant club. Any player who is interested should contact their club contact.
