Champions regain their title and Beechgrove bounce back

With three weeks left for the men’s league 1 it was ladies and the men’s league 2 which took centre stage.

Defending champions Stewartry CSC went into a double header this week knowing that victory against Annan and avoid defeat against Dalbeattie should be enough to claim their 4 title in a row. The match against Annan went as the league table suggested as Stewartry won the match 4-0 to set up the Dalbeattie match. With home advantage and sitting with 8 wins out of 8 Stewartry started as strong favourites for this match and that’s the way it went as the took the first 2 rubbers which pretty much secured the title as they went on to win the match 3-1 on the night. This leaves them 5 points clear of both Dumfries and Dalbeattie who go head to head on Wednesday to see who finishes runner up in the league.

In the men’s 2nd division last years relegated team Beechgrove entertained Kirkcudbright knowing that victory would secure a return to the top league at the first time of asking. Having only dropped one point this year they were favourites to win on home soil and that’s the way it went with a 4-0 victory to gin promotion.

Well done to both teams.

D&G Senior Doubles Leagues 2019

In the men’s division 1 table, only 1 point separates the top 4 teams with defending champions Dumfries A only top on rubbers won with Stewartry CSC on equal points with Dumfries B and Dalbeattie both on 9 points.

This week Dumfries C travel to Annan on Monday knowing that if they avoid defeat it puts them in a strong position to avoid relegation before the entertain Dumfries A on the Wednesday. Dumfries B host Stewartry CSC as Dalbeattie travel to Annan and Annan complete their 3rd home match in a week as they welcome Dumfries B on Sunday.

Brothers get the Double

Red2Yellow May event

Despite the mid-week forecast the 2nd round of the D&G Red2Yellow Tour went ahead in great conditions for tennis. We had 10 kids in the Red (8s & under) event and 8 in the Orange (9s & under) event. There were 13 kids from Dumfries Tennis Club and 1 each from Hamilton, Gretna, Castle Douglas, Annan and Carlisle.

In the red event we had some good matches from a young field with only three 8 year old kids taking part. In the semi-finals we had Adam Hunter from Dumfries, Erin McKenna (Annan), Eamon McFarlane (Castle Douglas) and Elona Kennedy from Hamilton. Adam just edge past Erin 10-5 to book his place in the final to meet Elona for the 2nd time as she beat Eamon 10-4. Eamon took the 3rd place as he completed a win over Erin 10-3. Being the youngest in the field certainly didn’t hold back young Adam as he and Elona played some nice rallies for the 2nd time as Adam had just edged a tight match in the round robins 10-9. This time he secured the gold medal with a 10-4 victory. All the kids played really well and a big mentioned to Bethany Mann who was competing in her first event and although no wins she played some great points and will take that into her next event.

In the Orange event we had an 8 player round robin with a very mixed set of results. On the day Cameron Hunter joined his brother in winning the Orange event with 6 wins out of 7. Dominik Czopek came 2nd with 4 wins out of 7 with Autumn Hodgins also winning 4 out of 7 to take third on points won. Lewis and Jack also won 4 games with a lesser points total with Ethan & Toby getting 3 wins out of their 7. Again another special mention to Oliver Bryant who was playing in his first event and like Bethany he played some great points but just fell short on getting a win.

Well done to all the kids today and thanks to Tessa and Rich for helping with the scoring and to Nichola, Rebecca and Magdalena for helping out in the kitchen, very much appreciated.

Well done to the Hunter boys…

There were 33 kids taking part in the 4 events from all over the UK. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Newcastle, Carlisle with 13 from Dumfries TC and 2 more local boys.

In the Reds mixed event there was a 1, 2 & 3 for Dumfries as Jack Wearing, Adam Hunter & Isaac Sharp claimed the top 3 places with Jack being undefeated in his 6 matches and 6 years old Adam Hunter only losing the 2 matches out of 6, both to Jack. Also a mention to Ruby Gordon who was playing in her first competition, no wins today but lots of good points to build on.

In the 10s event there were just the 2 local boys who were both stepping up from Orange court to play in the full court green ball event. Both boys played well against their older opponents with Brodie Little getting a couple of wins out of his 4 matches and Logan McCluskey played 3 without a win but just losing in the tie-break in one.

The final was played out with Doncaster’s Angus Jones against Newcastle’s Oliver Barlow. Neither boy had lost a game going into the final and it was Angus who started the stronger of the players and took an early lead but Oliver kept him game simple and eased his way back into the match before taking the match 5-3 to clinch the final. Innes Brockie came third by beating previous D&G Red2Yellow Tour winner Oliver Clark.

In the 2 Orange events Dumfries would take another 4 medals. In the boys event it was a 1, 2 & 3 again with Cameron Hunter, Grant Kerr and Ethan Leyman and in the Girls event Autumn Hodgins came 2nd behind Nikemi Olafare. Nikemi won all 5 of her matches with Autumn taking 3 out of 5.

D&G Red2Yellow Winter Tour Final Event

The last event of the 2018/19 D&G Red2Yellow Winter Tour was played in Spring like conditions at Dumfries Tennis Club.

We had 5 Dumfries players and Sam Donnelly from Dalbeattie TC taking part in the first outdoor Red ball event for 2019.

Both Dominik and Jack got to the last match without losing any matches although both were pushed all the way by Ethan Leyman 10-8 & 11-9, who was playing in his final Red ball match before moving up to orange on Monday. Adam Hunter got the better of both Sam and Caitlin Topping to secure 4th place with both Sam and Caitlin enjoying the first outing at the outdoor Red event.

This left the final match between Jack and Dominik to see who would secure the gold medal and the leaderboard trophy. The scores ebbed and flowed as the boys went toe to toe before Dominik consistent hitting  put pressure on Jack who started to hit a few long which gave Dominik the victory by 10-7 and lift the gold medal. However it was Jack who secured the trophy for the leaderboard with a 7 point margin at the top. Again great to see the kids playing well and enjoying the tennis.

Dumfries Kids make it a double

The final round of the D&G Mini Red Tour was completed today with 5 boys and 5 girls playing in the event. We has 5 from Dumfries TC, Jack Wearing, Dominik Czopek, Adam Hunter, Lucy Scade, Caitlin Topping and Abigail Warren with Erin McKenna and Joseph Wylie from Annan TC, Erin Charnock from Chatsworth TC and Samuel Donnelly from Dalbeattie TC.

There were 2 boys and 3 girls still in with a chance of securing the leaderboard title but it was going to be tight.

After a great number of round robin games it came down to 3 valuable matches. In the girls event Erin McKenna (Annan) last match against Caitlin Topping (Dumfries TC) proved to be decisive as Caitlin edge a tight match 10-8. This left the final girls match to decide who would take the gold and silver medal and confirm who would win the leaderboard event. The match started even as Erin Charnock (Chatsworth TC in Carlisle) who has won her previous 3 matches took on Lucy Scade (Dumfries TC) who had won 2 matches by 10-8 and lost 1 to Abigail Warren (Dumfries TC) 10-8. This went to the wire as both girls played some great tennis with the parents watching on. Erin had the first match point but Lucy held out and eventually went on to win 11-9 and with that results and the head to head win gave her the Gold medal and the Leaderboard title by a small margin of 20 points from Erin McKenna.

In the boys event the 2 favourites progressed to the last and final match with to set up then final shoot out to see who would be the 2019 leaderboard champions. Dominik Czopek (Dumfries TC) who recently won the Cumbrian Mini Red tour started the stronger against hitting partner Jack Wearing (Dumfries TC) and never looked back as his consistent play kept Jack chasing balls. Dominik went on to secure a 10-4 victory and with both the Gold medal and the 2019 Leaderboard giving Dumfries TC a double win in the boys and girls event.

Well done to all the kids with some very tight matches which on another day could have been so different.
