The Scottish weather at it’s best with temperatures in the high teens if not creeping into the twenties on a glorious Saturday for the 12s & under boys event to then finish the weekends play on a drizzly Sunday with a breezy wind cutting through the courts of Dumfries.

Saturday saw 6 local lads playing in the first 12s event of the Red2Yellow Tour. We had five from Dumfries and one from Annan Seaforth as the boys played under the baking sun. The first couple of rounds when the way of the experienced trio of Fergus Reynolds-Lewis, Jacob Holden (Both Dumfries) and Flynn Dalgliesh from Annan as they recorded 4-0 wins against the inexperienced opponents. Then as Jacob made it 3 wins with a tough match against Peter Whitelaw then came the match of the 2 favorites, early advantage went to Flynn as he broke Fergus’s serve. The next game proved crucial as both boys traded some good rallies before Fergus leveled at 1-1. With the court temperature rising both boys traded some lengthy rallies as Fergus started to gain the upper hand and completed the win 4-1. Peter managed 2 wins again Thomas Rideout and Finn Gordon before Thomas edged past Finn 4-3. Fergus completed the day undefeated with his 5th win before Flynn and Jacob played out a great match to see who finished 2nd and 3rd. The player produce a great set of tennis which included a 24 shot rally which was amazing under the baking sun. Flynn came through to win the match 4-0 but both players walked away with big smiles after a very close match which the score didn’t do it justice.
Red2Yellow 14 boys & Girls results
The contrast on Sunday was amazing as the rain fell gentle onto the artificial grass courts. Three local Moffat girls played out a round robin group as Heather Keal managed 2 wins against her club mates with Catie Palmer edging out Tessa Wilson to take runners up spot. In the boys event Moffat’s Brandon Smith completed 2 wins in his group to set up a final against rising young star Archie Agnew from Carlisle. Eleven year old Archie started strongly against his older opponent and dominated throughout the match to take the gold medal with a 4-0, 4-1 victory. The 3rd and 4th play-off saw 2 Edinburgh boys play out a close match as Stephan Britton Hall bt David Fairley 4-2, 4-3. This left the battle of the brothers as 10 year old Fergus took on his older brother Finlay for the first time in a competitive match. Both boys had struggled in the round robin but Fergus who had enjoyed a good winter of tennis proved to have more appetite for the win as he took this battle this time to secure 5th place.
The next scheduled competition is a Red and Orange event at Dumfries on 6th May.
This weekend saw the first 3 Red2Yellow Tour events take place.
Saturday 14th saw Dumfries hosting the green event with 3 local kids and one from Glasgow. The 3 locals kids had mixed results with some good performances through-out but Sandy Fraser from Glasgow managed to complete all four matches undefeated to take the first Gold medal of the tour. Danny McKenna (Annan) came second with Dumfries duo of Jacob Holden and Eve Crombie completing the placings.
The next 2 events were hosted by Annan Seaforth on Sunday 15th as the Red and Orange events kicked off. There were 7 entries in the Red event with 10 in the Orange event. In the Orange event there were 7 locals with 2 from Carlisle and one from Edinburgh taking part.
With a few Red players stepping up to the Orange event there were several tight matches in the early round robin groups before we got to the play-off. The top prize was contested between the 2 Carlisle boys as Jake Irving managed to go one better in the orange event as he held off Declan Agnew 10-6. In the 3rd and 4th play-off the Red ball winner Brodie couldn’t grab his second medal as Edinburgh lad Oliver Clark, who is a previous South of Scotland winner, edged past him with a 10-5 victory. We would also like to acknowledge the 2 girls who were playing their first Orange ball events. Ellie Wright held her nerve to win a tight match against her Annan team-mate Mia Renwick 12-10, well done girls and to all the boys.
Dumfries will host the next 2 event on 22nd April with the 12s & 14s events and then on the 6th May they host the next Red and Orange event.

Both ladies and men’s 1st divisions will play each other home and away, for the men’s division 2 league each team will play each other 3 times, so each team will have either 4 or 5 home games and the reverse for away games.
Lets hope for some good weather.
The final match of the 2018 D&G Winter League came down to the last rearranged match with Dumfries entertaining 4 times champions who were undefeated in all previous 15 matches. Both teams had won the previous 2 matches against Annan and Kirkcudbright with Dalbeattie completing all their matches away from home due to their courts being resurfaced.
Dalbeattie made their first change of the season with Darren Cassidy making his debut in the competition for the injured Paul Boardman with Graeme Cross coming in for Michael Goldie who partnered Martin Wilson in the previous days win against Annan.

Both teams made their way onto the Dumfries Courts with a bitingly cold easterly wind cutting through the venue. The first 2 singles matches were evenly contested with Graeme (Dumfries) using his experience to edge out Darren in the first match as he completed the win 7-5, 6-0. The results was revered in the other match a Stevie White (Dalbeattie) kept one step ahead of Martin Wilson (Dumfries) to take the match 6-4, 6-3. The title came down to the last doubles match with the current South of Scotland over 45 champions against the new partnership of Stevie and Darren. The Dumfries duo kept their nerve to hold back a powerful Dalbeattie team as the wrapped up the match and secured the first Winter titles for the club, 6-2, 6-4.

The final event of the 2018 D&G Mini Red Tour promised to be a spectacular show with 5 boys and 2 girls vying for the 2 shields.
In the girls event both Lauren Gourley (Moffat) and Autumn Hodgins (Dumfries) won the first 5 matches each and competed in the final match of the day for the girls. The winner would take the winners medal and the shield. Both girls had played some create tennis to get to this stage and the final again produced some excellent rallies as the girls got underway. Autumn started strongly taking an early 2-0 lead which she extended to 6-1 before Lauren fought back to win the next 3 points to make it 6-4. A couple more were shared before Autumn then completed the win 10-6. On the day, places were the same as the leaderboard as Grace Palmer (Moffat) came third, Eilidh Topping (Dumfries) came fourth with Kathryn Wilson (Beechgrove) coming fifth. This year we had 10 girls competing over the 3 events which is the best ever. Well played all the girls.
In the boys event there was great excitement as play got underway. After some great play in the round robins the first quarter final got underway as Brodie Little (Annan) edge a tight match 10-8 against Grant Kerr (Dumfries). The second quarter saw a repeat of the Annan final but this time the results was reversed as Lewis Hutchings (Dumfries) won the shoot-out 10-9 to beat Harry Brown (Moffat). That result had Harry looking over his shoulder as he was at that stage top of the leaderboard with the pack chasing him with more points to play for. Harry could only watch on. The 3rd quarter had Oliver McKnight (Moffat) against Logan McCluskey (Dumfries), the match went to the wire as Logan let a lead slip and Oliver took advantage to build up the points before winning 10-8. In the 4th quarter final Cameron Hunter (Dumfries) bt James Wilson (Moffat) 10-0 to complete the semi final line up. In the Consolation final Jack Wearing went one better than in Annan as he edge past Oliver Mattinson (Langholm) 10-8 to win the Consolation medal. The first semi saw Brodie Little win against Lewis 10-2 before Cameron Hunter beat Oliver McKnight 10-6. Oliver claimed third place as he beat Lewis 10-4 which ruled out Lewis’s chances of wining the shield. This left a shoot out between Brodie and Cameron with the winner being crowned overall leaderboard champion. Cameron started strong winning the first 2 points before Brodie levelled at 3-3. Cameron took the next point before Brodie won the next 5 to make it 8-4 then Cameron drew level to make it 8-8 only for Brodie to win the next 2 to take the title and the shield.
A great trio of events which were sponsored this year by Horizon Windows Dumfries. We had 23 local D&G boys competing this year with 5 Cumbrian boys taking part over the 3 events with a total of 223 matches over the 3 events.

Annan Seaforth were the opponents this week as both fixtures from last week were snowed off. The first match saw the tightest of matches as Paul Boardman edged past Mark Sindall (Annan) with a 6-4, 7-6 victory. In the second match Stevie Whites showed all his experience as he eased past Gareth Jones (Annan) 6-, 6-1 before the Dalbeattie duo wrapped up the match with a 6-1, 6-0 doubles win.
In the other match Dumfries travelled through to Kirkcudbright hoping to reverse last years 2-1 loss. In the singles we had a match victory for each team as Ian Cain overcame Martin Wilson (Dumfries) by 6-2, 6-3 whilst Graeme Cross (Dumfries) leveled the match by beating Mike Buckmaster 6-2, 6-2. The deciding rubber started well for the Kirkcudbright duo as they took the first set 6-3 before Dumfries leveled by taking the 2nd by the same score. Down to the tie-break which Dumfries edged with a 10-7 narrowest of wins to claim the match 2-1 and put them 2nd in the league behind Dalbeattie.
Next week sees Dumfries host Annan whilst Dalbeattie head down to Kirkcudbright.
