Champions Triumph again

All contenders entered the final matches undefeated and after play it remained that way but there could only be 2 winners. Defending champions and having won this title on the previous 5 years Dalbeattie A went into their final match away to Beechgrove knowing they had to match or better Dumfries  A’s result to have a chance of regaining the title. Both matches started well but as Dalbeattie A eased to a 4-0 win against Beechgrove, Dumfries A didn’t get it all their own way as Stewartry CSC pushed them all the way and gained a good draw as the matched finished 2-2 which left Dalbeattie A as the A league. In the B League Kirkcudbright A entertained Dumfries B, with both teams undefeated Dumfries B were looking for a big win to try to take the title but Kirkcudbright has other ideas as the first 2 rubbers were shared, this handed Kirkcudbright A the title for the third in four years as the match ended in a draw 2-2.

Congratulations to both Dalbeattie A and Kirkcudbright A.

Mixed Leagues delayed by weather

The conclusion to the mixed leagues has been halted by the weather in recent weeks with both the A and B leagues are still to be decided. Dalbeattie A sit second at present with 2 away matches to play, Beechgrove and Stewartry CSC. Dumfries A are top with one home match against Stewartry CSC.

In the B league Kirkcudbright A are one point clear of Dumfries B with both teams likely to meet in the final match at Kirkcudbright. Kirkcudbright knows that a win against Kirkcudbright B and a draw against Dumfries will be enough to secure the title, for Dumfries it’s simple, 2 straight wins and they are champions.

Colin and Jonny complete a hat trick of wins

The Border Cups Tennis Tournament was completed over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd August at Dumfries Tennis Club with 24 players competing over the 2 days. The event was again supported by Soltyre Ltd from Heathhall with DS Roofing Ltd sponsoring the match balls. Saturday’s play was mainly dry with some heavy showers but this didn’t stop the players. Last year’s beaten finalist Niklas Stingl from Kelso in the Borders was the favourite for this year’s event but this was short lived as he lost in the quarter finals to Kenan Wallace. Kenan took a tight first set 6-4 with Niklas levelling in the second 6-2 before Kenan took an early lead in the championship tie break third set and never looked back as he completed a very classy win 10-5 in the third. Unfortunately Kenan couldn’t repeat his form in the semi as Stevie White from Dalbeattie Tennis Club rolled back the years to win a tight match 7-5, 5-7 10-5. In the other semi defending champion Colin Dunbar used all his experience to come back from a set down against young Alex Shearman from Lochmaben. Alex took an early lead winning the first set 6-1 and looked comfortable in the second set before a lapse in concentration let Colin back in as he took the second set 7-5. In the championship tie-break Colin took a 4-0 lead to then lose the next 5 points to let Alex back in the match before Colin edged the match taking the tie-break 10-8.  In the final both players looked weary from the previous matches with Colin just keeping Stevie at arm’s length to make him champions for the third year in a row taking the match 6-3, 6-2. Colin Dunbar 2015 Winner

In the consolation final Jason Grindall completed a hat-trick of wins against players with an 8.2 rating. He overcame Lochmaben player Chad Lawson in the final 6-2, 6-3.

Colin was back in action on the Sunday defending his doubles title with Johnny Short from the Borders against Dalbeattie pair of Brian Litster and Fraser Patterson. Colin and Johnny raced into an early lead taking the first set 6-2 before a few moments of genius from Jonny and some decisive winners from Colin completed the result taking the second set 6-2. In the consolation doubles final Ben and Lister McKiddie edged a very close match against Paul Boardman and Stevie white, taking the match 6-3, 7-6.

South of Scotland

The Annual South of Scotland Tennis Championships was recently completed with play being split between the Blaes courts at Beechgrove in Moffat and the all-weather courts at Dumfries.  Unfortunately for the tournament organisers all 8 days of competition were interrupted by rain with more than half the matches being played at Dumfries, this despite the great efforts of committee members and volunteers who tried in vain to clear the water from the old Blaes courts at the historic Beechgrove Tennis Club.

Despite the weather, another healthy entry of 212 players descended into Dumfries and Galloway to play this historic event with winners from as far afield as Inverness, Dundee, Northumberland, Berkshire and Wrexham. The new organising team oversaw 336 matches over the 8 days with an average of 42 matches per day and peaking at 54 matches on the Thursday. We also saw a historic moment on the Monday with the event being played under floodlights for the first time in its history which was repeated through-out the week at Dumfries.

The Tennis that was played at both Moffat and Dumfries was of the highest level and the Men’s Singles Open saw a top class final with 19 years old Ruben Henry (Blackhall TC Edinburgh) just edging past  17 years old James Shemilt (David Lloyd Glasgow) 6-3, 7-6 to win his 1st South of Scotland Title.

The Ladies Singles Open final was an English affair which saw Northumberland’s Francesca Booth win a tighter match than the score line reflects 6-0, 6-3 against Sunderland’s Nicola Tweedy.

Two local boys, Alex Shearman and Chad Lawson again triumphed in the Men’s handicap doubles, which they regained from last year whilst Alex also regained the men’s handicap singles title in a repeat of last year’s final by beating local Moffat coach Mike McMillin 4-1, 4-2. Alex also reached both the 16s and 18s boys semi finals.

The one new event this year was created to thank our previous 2 referees, The Hanbidge and Howie Challenge Cup was created after both Colin Hanbidge and John Howie stepped down after 22 years of helping run this event and it was fitting that Colin himself entered and won the inaugural event by beating Trevor Herron in the final 6-0, 6-0. Many thanks gents and a big thanks to Magnox (North) for their help funding the new trophy.

This competition, which dates back to the early 1900’s has grown in stature over the past 20 years and is now one of the largest tennis competitions in Scotland, both the Tournament Committee and the Beechgrove Tennis Club Committee wait to see if Dumfries and Galloway Council can successfully source funding and approval to have all six court relayed with a surface fit for modern play. Without new courts who knows what will happen to the event in the future. If anyone would like to donate or help raise funds to assist with this project then please contact Michael at southofscotlandtennistournament@yahoo.com and he can put you in contact with the relevant people.

Finally we would like to thank the following; Hugo Allen and Glynis Allen the referees, welcome to Moffat, Billy and Russell the catering kings, without them the place wouldn’t be the same, cheers lads. Bryan, Mike, Russell W, Ewan and Robbie who all worked tirelessly to keep both the courts and surround area to the best it could be, Lara for sorting burgers and rolls, Adam and Mike who supported and helped us with transport when needed and Geoff Legg for helping with the presentations.  The organising committee would also like to thank the sponsors and supporters, without whom none of this would be possible,

Magnox North (chapelcross site), HEAD uk, Foundation Scotland, Annandale and Eskdale Upper Area Committee, Earl of Annandale and Hartfell,  The Star Hotel, The Stag Hotel, The Buccleuch Arms Hotel, The Balmoral Hotel, The Moffat House Hotel, Hartfell House, Limetree Restaurant, Claudio’s Restaurant and Maria’s Fish & Chip shop, Dumfries and Galloway Council, DS Roofing, Soltyres and Beechgrove Tennis Club (thanks Ladies). See you all 2016.

With over 100 matches planned on the first 2 days the officials kept a close eye on the Moffat weather and unfortunately it took a turn for the worst. After 40 plus matches on the Beechgrove Blaes the rain set in after 3pm and quickly the courts became unplayed. The players then up sticks and moved the event to Dumfries for the remainder of Sunday’s play and subsequently Monday as well. Play continued through-out Monday in the damp conditions and possibly for the first time ever matches in the South of Scotland event were played under floodlights at Dumfries. In the late evening Ben Hudson from David Lloyd Tennis Club in Dundee defeated Kyle Hughes-McCabe from Leyland LTC from Lancashire 5-4, 4-1 to take the 10s and under boys title.
