All the kids played 7 matches between the indoor courts and the outdoor courts at Chatsworth Tennis Club in Carlisle. There was some great tennis on the day from all the kids and despite some kids not getting the results they wanted all kids showed some good early season form as they returned from the winter break. The top five places were secured by D&G kids with Fergus Reynolds-Lewis (Dumfries) edging a tight match against Daniel McKenna (Annan) 10-7. The 3rd and 4th place play-off was between Moffat duo of Ben Rogerson and Rose Brown with Ben just holding off Rose 10-9. In fifth place was Flynn Dalgliesh from Annan who played some of the most consistence tennis all day. The final two boys, Jacob and Kyle should be very happy with their days play also, they played some very good tennis in patches and will now look to gain more experience in the upcoming months. Many thanks to all the parents for their time and big thanks to Tracey Burrus for running a great event.

D&G Mini Tennis Tour – Dumfries

The first tennis competition of 2017 saw the start of the D&G Mini Red Tour.

The tour was created for children 8 years and under to play tennis on red size courts which is the equivalent of a badminton size court with the excellent Babolat sponge balls. Players will accumulate points for each event they play in with medals being awarded for the winners, runners-up, third place and consolation winners at each event with the overall point’s winner receiving at trophy at the end.

Children from Seaforth Tennis Club in Annan, Beechgrove Tennis Club in Moffat, Dumfries Tennis Club and Langholm Tennis Club took part in the first of the 3 events which will run during January, February and March.

This year’s event at the Loreburn Hall started as a mixed competition due to only having 2 girls entered but the leaderboard would still have a boys and girls tables with 16 kids entered. In the Dumfries event there were some returning faces from last year and some new kids starting their tennis journey. Last year’s Dumfries winner Euan Sharp (DTC) was back to defend his title with Daniel McKenna (STC) as favourite for the leaderboard title event having come Third in last year’s Leaderboard event. After the round robin stages we had Euan Sharp (DTC), Erin McCluskey (DTC), Cameron Hunter (DTC), Daniel McKenna (STC), Devon Jones (STC), Oliver McKnight (BTC), Harry Brown (BTC) and newcomer Ethan Dunmore for Langholm Tennis Club making up the eight. After some excellent tennis the quarter finals results were, Cameron v Erin 10-7, Oliver v Devon 10-8, Daniel v Harry 10-6, Euan v Ethan 10-5. In the consolation quarters Beth Bailie (BTC) v James Wilson (BTC) 12-10, Logan McCluskey (DTC) v Alistair Mitchell (STC) 10-3, Mohamed Ali (DTC) v Joss Wright (STC) 10-5 and finally Finlay Walton (BTC) v Rhys Edwards (DTC) 10-1.

In the consolation event, Logan v Beth 10-4, Finlay v Mohamed 10-6 and in the final Finlay edge past Logan 10-3, in the main event we had two tight semi-finals, Oliver v Cameron 10-8, Euan v Daniel 10-8. In the final we had a surprised winner but very much deserved for all his efforts over the past 12 month Oliver v Euan 10-5 and in the Third place play-off Daniel v Cameron 10-5.

This leaves Oliver top of the leaderboard after the first even with Euan second and Daniel Third. In the girls event Erin sits top with Beth in Second. The next event is in Annan on Saturday 18th February, any child wanting to enter should contact Michael at tennis@dumfriessportsclub.co.uk

D&G Mini Red Tour 2017

We are delighted to announce that Dumfries and Galloway will be running a Mini Red Tour for the 2017 winter season.

The Mini Red Tour started in 2016 and was a great success, it is a great opportunity for players 8 and under (born on or after 1 April 2008) to get some competitive experience under their belts without having to travel too far, improve their ratings and hopefully have lots of great fun playing a wonderful sport that we hope they will play for many years to come.

HOW IT WORKS

The tour this time consists of 3 competitions at Dumfries on Sunday January 29th – 1pm to 4pm, Annan on Saturday February 18th – 12pm to 3pm and at Moffat on Sunday March 26th – 2pm to 5pm.

Each event has the same draw format (round robin groups) followed by knockout matches with group winners and second places going through to the main draw and group losers going into the consolation event (subject to numbers and interest). We are looking to run both girls and boys events at each venue with both having their own leaderboard.

D&G Mini Red Tour Leaderboard 2016

Individual performance at each venue is rewarded with points ranging from 100 for winning the event to 5 for losing in the first round of the consolation. These points are accumulated over the 3 events and the top boy and girl will receive a trophy each. There will also be medals awarded at each event for the top 3 players in each category.

The leaderboards will be updated via email to the club contacts following each event with reports being regularly posted on D&G Tennis website as well as the local papers. The results for each event should be displayed on the website. www.dumfriesandgallowaytennis.com

Having said all that, the main priority is enjoyment and improvement and you don’t have to play in every event as you can dip in and out as you wish ALTHOUGH 50 BONUS POINTS WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE DOING ALL 3 EVENTS.

D&G Tennis AGM

The Dumfries and Galloway Tennis AGM was held on Tuesday 22nd November with a change at the top.

keith-thom Keith Thom from the Dalbeattie Tennis Club was elected as District President as Lister McKiddie stepped down after many years of service to the D&G Tennis environment. Lister will stay on as district secretary and received a massive thank you from the club representatives for all his hard work and efforts throughout his time as president.

Keith has been in tennis for a long time and was recently part of the winning Scotland team in the Dan Maskell Trust Team Tennis. Welcome to the family Keith!

D&G Kids Progressing Well

Dumfries & Galloway kids have recently played in 3 Orange ball competitions in Dumfries and Carlisle with promising results and performances throughout. Over the 3 events there were 11 kids from the region who played in at least one of the 3 events with every child recording at least one win in their event.

For the 9 yrs and under kids this has been a progression from the D&G Mini Red Tour  which took place earlier this year, Summer club coaching, orange ball drill sessions at Dumfries throughout October and November and the 3 Orange ball competitions with 7 of the 11 kids going to Chatsworth Indoor Tennis Club in Carlisle on Sunday 13th November. On the day we had 3 hours of play on both the outdoor and indoor courts and there were 9 Cumbrian kids and the 7 D&G kids with 4 of the D&G kids only losing 1 match each in the Round Robin groups but more importantly all the kids enjoyed playing tennis in a new environment against the local Cumbrian kids.
